Math for Social Change — summer camps for middle and high school students where we work to think clearly and care for one another.
We want our society to approach math less in terms of memorization and repetition, and more in terms of fostering creativity and building the muscles needed for critical thinking and flexibility of mind — the ability to approach problems from many different perspectives.
When we look at Cleveland, one thing that sticks out to us is the inequality of opportunity in education. Since we love kids and we love math, we run summer camps where we attempt to interact better with our students and with each other. The flexibility of mind we develop for mathematical problems is also useful for social problems.
We run summer camps for middle and high school students to support our public schools.
We operate a bit differently. We have a radical respect for our students and their agency.
We see discipline as something we want to help our students develop within themselves, not something we do to them. And while we are firm in our standards, we are gentle with our kids, always offering them support to improve.
We want kids to accept the invitation to participate in our camps because they are inherently fun, interesting, and welcoming; we reject approaches to motivating kids based on fear or status.

We believe that the habits of mind developed through doing mathematics — persistence, flexibility of mind, integrity, courage — are the very same habits that help us to be better human beings.
